Portstewart Golf Club
First Established: 1894
Designed By: Willie Park Jnr., and Des Giffin
There are actually three 18-hole courses which together form Portstewart Golf Club, with the most famous and celebrated being the Strand course, which was deservedly awarded the prestigious honour of hosting the 2017 Dubai Duty Free Irish Open.
The Strand course arguably possesses the strongest, most impressive opening stretch of holes anywhere in Ireland, with dramatically undulating fairways winding through, and beautiful greens positioned amongst deep valleys and towering sand hills, with views across the beach, sea and towards Mussenden Temple precariously perched on a distant headland.
Rory McIlroy has stated that, “Portstewart is an excellent links course and one of Northern Ireland’s hidden gems”, however, after the extensive coverage it receives during the build-up to and the staging of this year’s Irish Open, Portstewart Golf Club won’t be so “hidden”, surely becoming one of the more popular Irish golfing destinations, and deservedly so.
