‘Old’ Tom Morris, in 1891, while holidaying in Donegal, took a drive to enjoy the sumptuous scenery and came across a stretch of land beside Sheephaven Bay that he instinctively knew had the potential to be formed into a legendary golf course; before he returned to Scotland he had the first links at Rosapenna staked out.
Rosapenna Golf Resort is now home to two contrasting championship links courses, with the Old Tom Morris Links remaining as ‘Old’ Tom intended, possessing many subtle challenges through low-lying dunes and undulating fairways, and the more recent Sandy Hills Links providing a modern and muscular test with fairways that wind and violently undulate through higher dunes.
Sandy Hills has speedily matured into one of the finest and widely-praised links courses in Ireland. There are many elevated tee boxes providing beautiful panoramic views of the surrounding bay yet fearful views of the fairway below positioned deep within natural bowls at the foot of the rising dunes.
‘Old’ Tom Morris has proven to be correct – the natural, spectacular landscape at Rosapenna continues to provide celebrated and unforgettable golfing experiences.
