The Treasures of Italy Tour

We will visit beautiful palaces and magnificent cathedrals, tour galleries with astounding paintings and sculptures from the masters, enjoy regional wines and olive oil at Poggio Amorelli winery, see spectacular Roman sites such as the Trevi Fountain, the Pantheon, the Colosseum and the Forum, gaze at Michelangelo’s The Last Judgement at the Sistine chapel, be contemplative at the prison where the apostle Paul was held, visit the Holy Stairs that Martin Luther climbed, and try our hand at making pizza.

We will also explore the ruins of Herculaneum destroyed by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius, take a boat ride to the Isle of Capri and witness its famed blue grotto, drive along the spectacular Amalfi coast, and relax and shop in quaint villages. Each site will enhance our understanding of this incredible country full of history and incredible beauty.

Day 1 – Sunday: Departure

  • Depart from Omaha on overnight flights to Venice, Italy

  • Relax and prepare for the start of your Italian adventure

Day 2 – Monday: Arrival in Venice

  • Arrive in Venice, meet your Reformation Tours Tour Director

  • Transfer by boat to your hotel on Venice Island

  • Afternoon free to explore the canals, bridges, and piazzas

  • Welcome Dinner with your tour group at the hotel

Day 3 – Tuesday: Venice

  • Guided walking tour of Venice, including:

    • Doge’s Palace

    • St. Mark’s Square, Bell Tower, and St. Mark’s Cathedral

  • Afternoon free for personal exploration — options include:

    • Shopping near the Rialto Bridge

    • Watching glassblowing demonstrations

    • Taking a gondola ride or relaxing at Caffè Florian

    • Visiting Gallerie dell’Accademia to view masterpieces of Venetian art

Day 4 – Wednesday: Florence

  • Scenic drive to Florence, stopping at Piazzale Michelangelo for panoramic city views

  • Guided walking tour featuring:

    • Ponte Vecchio bridge

    • Galleria dell’Accademia to see Michelangelo’s David

    • The Duomo and Baptistry

  • Dinner and overnight in Florence

Day 5 – Thursday: Florence

  • Visit the world-famous Uffizi Gallery, home to Botticelli’s Birth of Venus and many Biblical masterpieces

  • Enjoy lunch at All’Antico Vinaio, Florence’s celebrated sandwich shop

  • Free afternoon for independent exploration — options include:

    • Visiting the Boboli Gardens

    • Shopping or taking a Tuscan cooking class

    • Wandering Florence’s charming streets and piazzas

Day 6 – Friday: Florence to Assisi (via Tuscany)

  • Travel through Tuscany’s wine country with visits to scenic villages

  • Enjoy a wine tasting and lunch on the panoramic terrace at Poggio Amorelli Winery

  • Sample local produce, truffles, cheeses, and olive oils

  • Continue to Assisi and dine at your hotel

Day 7 – Saturday: Assisi

  • Explore Assisi, birthplace of St. Francis

  • Walking tour includes:

    • The Basilica of St. Francesco, adorned with 13th–14th-century frescoes

    • Roman Temple of Minerva in the town square

  • Afternoon free to wander Assisi’s peaceful streets and enjoy its spiritual atmosphere

Day 8 – Sunday: Rome

  • Drive through Tuscany to Rome, stopping for lunch en route

  • Afternoon panoramic tour of the Eternal City:

    • Trevi Fountain, Pantheon, Spanish Steps, Colosseum, and Piazza Navona

  • Optional inside Colosseum visit available

Day 9 – Monday: Vatican City

  • Tour Vatican City, including:

    • The Sistine Chapel and Vatican Museums

    • St. Peter’s Basilica, the largest church in the world

  • Afternoon free for independent sightseeing

  • Optional tour of the Roman catacombs

Day 10 – Tuesday: Rome’s Sacred Heritage

  • Visit the Scala Sancta (Holy Stairs), ascended by Martin Luther during his 1510 pilgrimage

  • Reflect on Christ’s trial before Pilate and His Passion

  • Explore the Roman Forum and Mamertine Prison, where Paul was held

  • Visit San Pietro in Vincoli, home of Michelangelo’s Moses

  • Evening pizza-making class at La Carovana Restaurant

Day 11 – Wednesday: Herculaneum & Sorrento

  • Travel south toward the Amalfi Coast

  • Visit Herculaneum, a smaller yet beautifully preserved site from the 79 AD eruption of Vesuvius

  • Continue to Sorrento, overlooking the Bay of Naples

  • Dinner and overnight in Sorrento

Day 12 – Thursday: Capri Excursion

  • Ferry to the Isle of Capri, one of Italy’s most stunning islands

  • Private boat trip around the island, with a stop at the Blue Grotto (weather permitting)

  • Ascend to Anacapri for breathtaking panoramic views

  • Return to Sorrento for a relaxed evening

Day 13 – Friday: Amalfi Coast & Farewell Dinner

  • Scenic drive along the Amalfi Coast, one of the world’s most beautiful coastal routes

  • Stop in Positano for leisure and photos

  • Return to Rome for a farewell dinner celebrating your Italian journey

Day 14 – Saturday: Return Home

  • Transfer to Rome Airport for flights back to Omaha

  • Bid farewell to Italy with cherished memories of art, faith, and fellowship
